Today’s pictures are from Turkmenistan which I visited in 2017. I went because I had hugely enjoyed Uzbekistan, which was expected, but also Kazakhstan where I had not known what to expect.

I loved the architecture, the wide open spaces and also the ruins of what had obviously been grand civilizations in the Middle Ages. We did not spend much time in Ashgabat though the sunset is from our hotel there, where we had one night between Dashoguz and Turkmenbashy.

We went first to Mary for the grand ruins at Merv, then flew to Dashoguz for Konye Urgench and much else, and after driving back to Ashgabat flew to Turkmenbashi where we found a splendid hotel with a view over the Caspian. We drove back from there via the hot springs where I had wallowed in the waters on what was my 63rd birthday.
